Hard to choose between this game and the France South Africa game for the best World Cup game ever. What a weekend that was!!!

i was a distraught ireland fan but i did have to admit that it was ludicrous the way our media wrote off the all blacks. the one country, South Africa, that actually showed them respect were the ones who ultimately got the job done

Looking back at this game without the emotion on the day, I must confess that NZ had the edge from the beginning.

Love Aaron Smith shouting ‘Get up ardie’ at 1:31:25, even though ardie definitely should’ve got the penalty there. Hopefully roigard can live up to his legacy

This is the match I wanted to rewatch the most. Finally, thank you, World Rugby.

Before this match, I kept telling people never to sleep on the Allblacks. People kept on saying the ABs won’t have a chance. Even Irish Pundits, ex professionals kept on saying that the Irish need to play at just 90% and they’ll win comfortably 😂😂😂.

I think the Irish got carried away when they beat South Africa in the pool stages. Even though the Springboks didn’t have a kicker, the game still ended up being close.

This loss brought them down to earth, and I was so happy when they lost. In general, I love Irish people, I think they’re amazing. I love their history and their culture, but in rugby, they needed some humbling, and they got it.

Well played New Zealand 😍.

This Ireland team is magnificent, but they’re simply not the best team in the world! The depth and generational experience of the Boks and All Blacks remains supreme.

I’m Irish and a huge All Blacks fan too. Loyalty that night was to Ireland and it would’ve been great to beat NZ but they did well. This game was an absolute exhibition and both teams went down with a fight.

Dear Ireland. Don’t be arrogant, until you actually win a world cup. Your media and ex players, as pundits should also relax as they too have never won a world cup or knock out game. That’s the downfall. The pressure from the media and arrogance, ex players who haven’t won it either, acting as greats. This team has all the potential. Just went into the world cup abit to arrogant, abit to over confident. Unfortunately.

1:33:17 just sums it up perfectly: Attack wins Six Nations etc, Defence matters most at the highest level.

Ireland and France went into this World Cup thinking they deserved to win and that’s why they didn’t. The Boks have a lot of arrogant fans as well but at least they have something to show for it, being consistent in a time that doesn’t really matter only takes you so far. The Boks and All Blacks didn’t need to prove to anyone that they could win World Cups, they’ve done it multiple times over compared to Ireland that really hasn’t done much in World Cups getting credit where they don’t deserve/ earned it. At least France have been in World Cup Finals.

Last minutes of this game is insane ireland did 37 phases just wow if they scored that try it would be the greatest match winning try of all time

The best part of this World Cup (aside from winning it of course) was seeing South Africa and New Zealand, respectively, dispatching France and Ireland. All this boasting and posturing came to such a swift and dramatic end, and the fallout was glorious.

It reminds me of this quote: “A mountain was in labour, uttering immense groans, and on earth there was very great expectation – but it gave birth to a mouse.”

They say we have soft defence and bad teams in super rugby, but we dont have 60+ blowouts like the ultimate rugby championship,

Look what showed up on my news feed. Haven’t watched this game since November. Rewatching it after a few months certainly does solidify a few thoughts and opinions I had at the time and also highlighted things I hadn’t noticed. The AB’s were just absolutely awesome in this game. Playing 20 minutes with 14 men, countless dubious calls going against them, officials hellbent on keeping Ireland in the game right into overtime. The AB’s didn’t have the best start to the tournament. But, they were the ones that showed true heart, grit and composure. They were the ones that showed their class, mental and physical toughness when it mattered. Surround by a predominantly Irish crowd, written off by everyone except for the diehard faithfuls. Ireland played a great game and to the best of their ability, or were allowed too, unfortunately for Ireland it wasn’t enough to get them home.
Couple of things that stood out for me was watching a young AB proping pair (with little or no game time coming into this match), monster Ireland’s best. Even when the reserve proping pair (who were even younger and inexperienced) came on and pumped the Irish old heads. AB’s only used 21 men for this game as well. What an effort. Best game in WC history.

I think I had a few mild heart attacks. Stopped breathing cause I was too vocal.
And then our hero stepped up to take the Irish out of the game.
Congratulations to MY BELOVED ALL BLACK AND THE MIGHTY SAM WHITLOCK. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE IRISH AS WELL.

Watching it in April 2024 though some time has passed, its still enthralling for our ABs to knock off the no 1. in the world and to have 2 penalties missed in the finals to win the championship. Proud as punch for my ABs.

37 phases and no penalties conceded by NZ. Steel-core tactical discipline from the ABs. Probably the best defensive effort ever seen on a RWC. What a match!

First viewing of the video since that game seen from the stands very close to the final action. Confirming the first feeling of this being the best World Cup match ever. The SA-France quarter final, also seen from the stand the following day, was great but a wee bit below in intensity and quality. Fun fact, of the 6 tries, only one (the penalty try) was not from an NZ hand.

Possibly the most satisfying game of rugby that I’ve watched, and I’ve watched a few, the 96 epic v South Africa at loftus in Pretoria, the Wallabies in 2000 in front of 100 thousand spectators at stadium Australia, Jonah scoring the winner in the final minute…
This game v Ireland is right up there.
