Spain secured qualification to the Rugby World Cup in France 2023 after defeating Portugal in Madrid in Round 4 of the Rugby Europe Championship.
I’m a Spanish rugby fan and I have to admit that Portugal has been playing the most beautiful rugby in this championship. With players like Portela, Storti, Marta…Portuguese rugby has got a great future. Best wishes.

Two biggest rising teams in the world. I know they’ve been good for years, but they’re becoming GREAT!
Excellent performance from both teams. Spain will be no pushover at the World Cup. It’s good that they’ve qualified but I think something more needs to be done to promote rugby throughout Europe and increase interest. Outside of the 6N teams it remains essentially a minority sport.
Granted there is the European Shield tournament which is without doubt improving the quality of the second tier game but it’s low key and many are unaware of it. It needs investment and exposure and there has to be a route for teams like Spain to break into tier 1. The fact that the 6 nations tournament is ring fenced is grossly unfair to teams like Spain that aspire to reach it. Spain has to wait every four years for a World Cup whereas Italy are in the 6 nations every year and haven’t really delivered.
A fair and proper way to expand rugby in Europe would be to make the European Shield the Second division 6 nations and allow promotion/relegation between the 2 divisions. This way the tier 2 nations have a goal to aim for.
Unfortunately I doubt it will happen for some reason World Rugby has it’s head in the sand and is refusing to budge.
Well done Spain, shame there had to be a losing team as Portugal are playing so well too.
Congrats to Spain and kudos to Portugal team who delivered very nice rugby since they joined the championship. I wish all Spain, Romania and Portugal could reach the world cup, they made this tournament very competitive.
I believe Romania will make it to the 3rd place and will be a big contender for the last qualification seat, though the loser of the USA/Chile match will have something to say as well.
I am Italian and I am very happy to see that rugby is growing both in Spain as in Portugal! Let’s go!
Spain is a righful winner as it played very well and consistently throughout this year but I’m heartsick for seeing Portugal missing out the World Cup in France.

It’s always fantastic to see the lesser known teams play so well, shame it’s impossible to watch a lot of these legally in most countries.
